On Tuesday, Dec. 29, I moved all of our crap out of the living room (except the heavy stuff--Ian had to help me with that) and we ripped up the carpet. Carpet and its padding is a lot heavier than you would think, even the cheap builder's carpet that we had in here. The padding was glued down around the edges, and there were a ton of carpet tacks (and brittle tack strips), so it was a pain to get it all up. The next day Ian's dad came over with his tools, and we had to use a flat shovel and some scrapers to get the rest of the glue up to make sure the floor was flat and smooth.
We swept and vacuumed several times, because when installing laminate it's important that you don't have even the tiniest bit of dirt or debris left on the floor.
I've kept my promise and continue to take steps towards getting this living room fixed.
Here we see the setting concrete which fills in the space where the paving slabs had previously been. As the concrete has settled it now matches the original concrete floor level. I'll need a small cut of lino' or something similar to make the level match that of the surrounding floor tiles, before I put the wood flooring
